When you walk through the garden
You gotta watch your back
Well I beg your pardon
Walk the straight and narrow track
If you walk with Jesus
He's gonna save your soul
You gotta keep the devil
Way down in the hole
He's got the fire and the fury
At his command
Well you don't have to worry
If you hold on to Jesus hand
We'll all be safe from Satan
When the thunder rolls
Just gotta help me keep the devil
Way down in the hole
All the angels sing about Jesus' mighty sword
And they'll shield you with their wings
And keep you close to the lord
Don't pay heed to temptation
For his hands are so cold
You gotta help me keep the devil
Way down in the hole

always wondered where 3rd bass sampled this from?
His voice was intentionally difficult. It was a voice for the downtrodden of society.  Not meant to be pleasing, but I always needed to listen.

Great songwriter, godawful singer. Waits' songs are best covered IMO.

Hear me out:  He has 5-6 different personas in his songs.  If you were to group his songs by the character he uses to sing each song, you would construct multiple different coherent interconnected story lines.  Say what you will about his singing voice, but I think the idea is genius.
The theme used in "The Wire" which debuted 24 years ago today. Each season they used a different cover (not this one though).

Perhaps he should stay there!
