We laugh and listen to music curated by brilliant minds and do the best we can.
Still relevant without trying.
It's an automatic 10. Because every Steely Dan song, without exception, is a 10. Even those on Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go. All 10.
I think you are spot on for their first seven albums. Every song is crafted. No filler. No mailing it in.
Nothing Steely Dan has done sounds dated to me. They were a totally unique band that has held up very well, IMHO. If only I could convince Bill to have a Steely Dan Mix channel on the RP app!
Totally agree. The Dan were absolutely great!
But great art they are!
A lot of their stuff sounds pretty dated (as in "very-much-of-its-time") to me - especially their first few albums. After all, there were some different production methods and musical trends in the early '70s. That doesn't make it bad, even if it is kind of a goofy-sounding keyboard on this number.
I believe the keyboard sound was intentionally made to sound science-fictiony, like the theme song of the original Star Trek, in order to invoke the science-fiction aspects of nuclear war as perceived during that era. So a song written in 1973 was intentionally made to invoke 1966.
They’re the best.
Music, new or old, is the best on RP.
Thank you Mr William and crew.
I see I rated this song an 8. Shame on me!
Hurry up & do something about it!

Yep, yep, yep. One of the few bands I can listen to for hours straight, and miss listening to them a week later. Seems there is always something I missed that I get to discover.
Perfect! Very well put!
Same here. I loved this one back in the day, and appreciate the musicianship even more now.

And this is a GREAT album. Maybe their best. It's aged well.
Agreed!!!!
Hard to believe Skunk Baxter transitioned to a NSA Security Analyst....https://www.mspinsights.com/doc/what-a-hippie-rock-guitarist-with-top-secret-clearances-has-to-do-with-managed-services-0001
what? a bit weird, but someone's gotta do it as long as it's on the up and up. i don't have high trust levels for "security analysts"
still weird
Agreed. Excellent album. Great guitar work from Denny Dias and Skunk Baxter.

which is what drives me to love this song as much as I do.
And we lost a great one in Walter.
along with the cosmic jam of The Dan we are presented with another "magical pass" by RP's Yaqi in Chief coloradojohn!
I had to think of:
Carlos Castaneda (December 25, 1925–April 27, 1998) was an American author with a Ph.D. in anthropology.
Starting with The Teachings of Don Juan in 1968, Castaneda wrote a series of books that describe his training in shamanism, particularly with a group whose lineage descended from the Toltecs. The books, narrated in the first person, relate his experiences under the tutelage of a Yaqui "Man of Knowledge" named don Juan Matus.
Fantastic

Just the keyboards?
It is Steely Dan. The nostalgia factor is in over-drive.
Incidentally, the keyboard bit I just heard would likely be performed with an electric guitar these days.
Like 45 yrs dated? I mean, it's not like this was just released :^ /
Exactly! So many other better SD tunes I'd rather here...

They are as slug slime against my ears.
Slug Slime?!!
That's it, I'm sending Vinny over to pay you a visit! ; )

Some of y'all don't like my fave bands either.
Agreed. Excellent album. Great guitar work from Denny Dias and Skunk Baxter.
