But now I weep for those who've gone.
Into rooms of grief and questioned wrong,
But keep on killing.
It's in the soul to feel such things,
But weak to watch without speaking.
Oh what mercy sadness brings,
If God be willing.
There is a train that's heading straight
To heaven's gate, to heaven's gate.
And on the way, child and man
And woman wait, watch and wait.
For redemption day.
Fire rages in the streets,
And swallows everything it meets.
It's just an image often seen,
On television.
Come leaders, come you men of great,
Let us hear you pontificate.
Your many virtues laid to waste
And we aren't listening.
What do you have for us today,
Throw us a bone but save the plate.
Oh why we waited til so late,
Was there no oil to excavate
No riches in trade for the fate
Of every person who died in hate
Throw us a bone, you men of great.
There is a train that's heading straight
To heaven's gate, to heaven's gate.
And on the way, child and man
And woman wait, watch and wait.
For redemption day.
It's buried in the countryside,
It's exploding in the shells of night,
It's everywhere a baby cries,
Freedom, freedom.
Freedom, freedom.
Freedom.
I actually like Sheryl Crow - both as a singer and as someone who, for a short time, dated the fallen cycling icon Lance Armstrong. The latter connection did not end well for her but I think she dodged a bullet on that one and she was better off without him. Some have mentioned her whining voice - I don't agree - I liked her young, sassy and foxy voice with a hint of Country twang back in the late 90's and yes, I also liked one of her contemporaries - Alanis Morissette. Neither are particularly liked on RP and neither really made it 'big' in the following decades, but that is OK. it's only music after all and they still made their mark - albeit a short one.
Perfect. Thanks.
I once had a (most) friendly argument with a AL fan when I pointed out that most of the examples in the song, "Isn't It Ironic?" aren't actually ironic. They're coincidental. They had emotionally invested in the album, and I had just given it a significant dig, and words got used.
I saw SC with Michael Penn and Wilco opening. Shawn Colvin sang one song with Sheryl. Cool outdoor show.
I have heard that all the lyrics in "Isn't It Ironic" are merely "bummers", and are not ironies. But, having a hit song titled "Isn't It Ironic" that doesn't contain any ironies is an irony. That makes me wonder though, now that the song is ironic for not including ironies, is it no longer ironic because it itself has become ironic and therefor contains an irony due to its existence? Feels like some sort of time travel paradox...
use the fast forward button instead of bitching about how much you abhor the song.
Unfortunately that’s not always available…. Bitching about unenjoyable songs helps pass the time until something better comes on. Quit reading if you don’t like it. 😜
How does one vote this as a 1? And like RP at all?

Redemption.
Shall we consider redemption on a cold Jan 2024 morning? I think not. Where are my happy pills?
I just wanted to say that this was a wasted opportunity to use "Fredding about it too much".
Combined with the cycling use of the word "Fred" and her connection to Lancey Pants, I'd say this was a doubly wasted moment.
i think she's a major talent, both as a musician and a songwriter. her career is pretty amazing. however, i find her voice quite nasal, and that stands out a great bit in this song particularly. but maybe it is intentional, maybe adds more meaning to the delivery of the lyrics. not sure. but, again, i think she's super talented and i do like many of her songs.
I think you misunderstood the comment. The person, implies to me, that there is no song/music on RP that rates a 1. I'm thinking this person liked her song quite a bit.
I agree with the sentiment that a song was truly so awful it deserved a 1, it wouldn't be on William's playlist.
I've heard this silly argument from lots of RP listeners. And it's a stupid comment. Just because I, or other people, listen and enjoy some of the music on this station does not in any way mean we will like hearing everything. In fact there are several artists played here who I would be glad if I never heard of again, but I do listen because there has been some different music I have enjoyed. Also, RP makes good background noise while at work. However, many of the listeners here seem to think that every single song Bill plays is some paragon of musical excellence. Heaven forbid one finds a certain style or artist "annoying". Or heaven forbid one simply hates hearing music from a "legendary" artist, or in Crowe's case "not so legendary". Then the silly comments such as the one above come out. Deal with it people, we all have different likes and tastes. Heaven knows people dislike lots of music I enjoy, but to post a quote such as the one above is a bit much.

Bill has to manage the royalties to pay the bills.
Sometimes we get lesser works from accomplished artists. We all get to
hear something by some of our favorites (actually, quite a lot!), and
it all works out. That said, Jelani's comment about the cat being near
the microphone seemed appropriate (before I clicked fast forward to
provide relief!).
Royalties have nothing at all to do with the songs selected for airplay here and the royalties paid to every artist - for every song - are the same amount.
Conspiracists need their theories.

I don't mind the low marks, but I object to people not spelling an artist's name correctly.
Wow! Lots of incels represented in these comments. I'll bet they have the same opinion of Danica Patrick in a completely different field of endeavor.
You beat me to it. Incels!

Huh? She was in her mid-30's when this was written and by then, she'd have had more life experiences than most people twice that age.

One of her better songs.
Whether you like the song or not, that's just funny

Dig it.

Legitimate (if rhetorical) question and I often wonder the same thing since there are "1" ratings on every song. That's why I like reading the cogent negative comments so I can begin to understand other peoples opinions. Ultimately, it doesn't matter though. This one's a solid 7 for me.

Same situation just right now

Actually, the "gender issue" is one of the reasons I enjoy Ms. Crow's music. I find her voice ... well ... sexy.
Beer most likely.

nice story but I cannot figure out what a barley stand is - something to do with crops perhaps

A lot of comments about Sheryl's vocal strength and it makees wonder if there's a double standard with female artists. Do men's voices catch the same scrutiny? It's not like she has a bad voice, it's just not as strong as other women's singers'. How many male artists don't even bother to sing or, sing with "character?" I think women are held to a much higher standard.
I actually had a vocal coach tell me that this is true. She mentioned that there is so much pressure on women artists to be perfect at all times, yet for men it wasn't as important. I wonder if it has something to do with the higher ranges...perhaps in higher ranges, flaws are heard more easily because of the impact on the nervous system, where lower ranges are more soothing, so errors are not that big a deal.
Just speculating...
DITTO.

I wouldn't have guessed that this was her until I got up and looked.
Yep, awesome song
Well done...

You're far from alone in your opinion. Try as I might, I can't get past her weedy voice.
I suppose that's an upside.
Play her music on a decent system and forget all the gender and personality issues.

I agree Joan would have an awesome voice for this.
All 3 of her first albums have real artistic merit, IMHO. I even really like #r4, C'Mon, C'Mon, which strikes me as a loving tribute to the 70s pop so many of us grew up on.
Yup. Does a neat jazz thing on her first album, too. "We Do What We Can." A 10!

RP has played songs from three of those tonight: Odelay, The Colour and the Shape, and this. I was listening to this very song when I made a major decision in my life, one that's affected nearly everything since. (It was a good decision.) I wouldn't take back the late 90's for anything, but I would never want to live through them again!
I do, however, have a complaint.
Now that everyone knows that you can achieve your musical potential, we have something of value to reference when you're sharing a greasy mic with Kid Rock or some other wonder of nature.
*snork*
I would hardly say that she is persona non grata. Look at her ratings. Pretty solid. Don't focus so much on the haters who will rally to complain at every opportunity. Most people seem to be quietly enjoying her music without saying anything. I guess the rest are just the vocal minority.
"Find the cost of freedom buried in the ground. Mother Earth will swallow you, lay your body down."
Very beautiful words indeed......................
