"Autumn" is from the Ray Bradbury story Something Wicked This Way Comes and I wrote it with David J Bauhaus. We sat at breakfast pushing small potatoes around on our plates and drinking coffee and talking random topics until we both realized that the words "the autumn carnival" made the hair stand up on the back of our necks, so we thought that was what we should create a song about."
Actually, "Something Wicked" is a novel by Bradbury, one of his few, and it's definitely recommended. A wonderful portrait of small town America between the wars when 12 year old boys had the run of the town in summer, and of the friendship between two boys who are so similar and yet so different. When Cooger and Dark's Pandemonium Show comes to town at first it breaks the boredom, then opens up the horror of adolescent fears and desires. Best perhaps to come to it first as a teenager, as I did. But Bradbury is a master craftsman with words and will take you to a place and immerse you in it until you are lost.
I may have to get my copy down this evening.
That should not affect your feelings toward the song at all, if you like it, you like it, if you don't, you don't. Screw what everyone else thinks.
I don't think they are underrated at all. They are pretty successful, perhaps more than their actual music dictates.
This has to be sarcasm right?
ROFL
I can get down with the Dandy's, but this is shit is weak.
Wake up man, you're doing a vocal take.
My son's favorite band growing up was the Dandys and now my son considers them friends. He even went to Portland spend some time with them (primarily Courtney) because he is studying music business here in Virginia. He even got to do some recording at the "Odditorium" where they produce themselves and other bands via their label "Beat the World" records.
That entire story seems really surreal to me now. I can't believe it even happened.
"...tied up, turned away, and held for ransom..."
Not a bit Petty-like? 'Refugee'?
Great tune, has a really special gothic vibe going. According to the singer it was inspired by some horror novel named "Something Wicked This Way Comes" - is that recommended reading? Anyway, here's the quote:

Something Wicked This Way Comes is IMHO required reading. Bradbury at his finest.

And "Enjoy Yourself" off of "The Machine" -- makes me laugh out loudand really hard every time I listen to it. Fantastic tongue-in-cheek reminiscence of being young....
Can't remem ber when or where I saw this, maybe 10-15 yrs ago, but Courtney Taylor-Taylor had (or has) a blog of movie reviews. He's quite the humorous guy...
