I can't believe that this is the only Monkees song on RP and how infrequently it's been played. I grew up on these guys and, regardless of whether they wrote their own music or played their own instruments, they've earned a place in R&R history, IMHO.

My elementary school days were FULL of The Monkees' songs...some, such as I'm a Believer, if we brought them in, were even played by the nuns at St. Augustine's for sing-alongs in Music class.  I also remember convincing my grandmother in Coffeyville, Kansas, to buy me a box of cereal because it had, manufactured into the side of the box, a 45-rpm single called, (I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone, if my memory serves me correctly.  I cut it out and played it on my aunt's turntable, and, warped as it was, it transported me.  At the time, Grandma was listening to Paul Harvey on her tube radio in the kitchen and asked me to turn it down.  The Last Train to Clarksville comes for all, so abide in Peace, Mr. Jones, until we see and dance with you there by and by...
