Even a one-channel Tony Clifton demo of this song would be preferable (and infinitely more entertaining, I'm sure) to this live take. Tell me it has sounded better live before/since?

I made sure to see them on the Monster tour, although not a HUGE fan of the album, specifically because they had always said that if they were still together by the year 2000 that they would break up. I was disappointed with the concert (it was the tour where one by one, they each got sick, or had to have surgery or whatever) but thought, "at least I've seen them live before they are no more." Well, they didn't stick to their promise... but maybe they should have.

I read somewhere, a very long time ago, that they'd agreed to hang it up in the year 2000. I was sad then, but now I wish it'd have happened.

I tend to think that succes and all that comes with it, like lots of money, have got a contrary effect on artists. Especially when it took them long to get some. They've suddenly reached the goal they strived for and the challenge seems to be gone.
The same effect makes it hard to quit, when they know the ought to (succes is addictive).
Of course there are always exceptions to the rule and i'm not quite sure whether or not REM is one of them.
Yah yah yah yah...I am like really tired of this song as it is, this recording of it is even worse. I generally like live recordings, has more energy in it, but this one is too much.
From the OTHER Portland, I have to say I agree with Bubba. One thing that really bugs me is live performances that you can hear the audience sing along on. The excitement of a live performance is more in the immediacy and one-off of it. There are a few exceptions, but this isn\'t one of them.
It seems like everyone pretty much agrees that this is a good song, but a bad recording. So, like, does anyone from RP actually read any of these or this is just for us to bitch to each other? This seems like a really good and unique forum for listeners to give input to the station operators...why not use it?

I agree with what\'s been said already: not a bad song, but definitely not a good live rendition of it. Stick with the studio version or find a good bootleg.

Lousy version of a great song. If you're looking for it, there's plenty of live and/or obscure REM that beats the crap out of this.
Speaking as a huge REM fan, Michael Stipe really sounds gravelly in this live version. What a shame. Mike Mills, however, is hitting the high notes quite nicely in the backup vocals! Stipe should hand over the mic to him more often than the occasional Near Wild Heaven.
