I first heard this song on a boot legged 8 track tape of a live recording called 11/17/70 that I "acquired" as a 13 year old.  This made me an unabashed Elton fan in the face of my friends love of LED Zep. Deep Purple etc. (who I liked too).   Took a lot of shit for it but I still love this song today. If you haven't heard 11/17/70, check it out.  Godlike imo.
The amount of 'meh' this generates is pretty evident in the fact that this track has one of Elton's lowest ratings on RP...just 3:45 of average...

No comments? Wow. Some of my fav Elton!  We need Teacher I Need You, and other early classics.

If you were the first to comment, most likely was not played on RP previously.
I would have claimed first if I had been the 1st to comment.
Your is the only comment that comes up older than mine.

Elton will be mortified.
Sir Elton and Bernie Taupin are true pop music legends. I was
really happy they won a Grammy the other night

I think there are few comments because it's just not among his best. Lyrics are nearly nonsensical (unless someone knows the meaning, if there is one), and the 'na-na-na's seem like filler. That said, I still like it.

The best thing about music is the ambiguity that allows one to take what they want from a written piece.  My thoughts.

A young man.  A virgin.  Is he a she?  Was he/she a virgin?  Is he Jesus?  Where must he/she be taken for resolution?  Pontius Pilate?  A trial for high treason?  The uncertainty of belief.

Is God real?    He is if you feel that it's real.

Elderberry Wine would be welcome

From Rolling Stone (https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/readers-poll-the-10-best-elton-john-deep-cuts-61784/take-me-to-the-pilot-2-177752/)

Bernie Taupin can recall the inspiration behind most of his lyrics, but "Take Me to the Pilot" has always been a bit of a mystery to him. "There's no thread of reality," he said in 1997. "The pilot can be anything, from something as insignificant as a pilot of a plane to Pontius Pilate. It's however deep the listener wants to go, but for me there wasn't a tremendous amount of depth. It was right off the top of the head."
Nice to see the good  EJ  getting some over due consideration.
