And couldn't remember
What is love and what is hate
The calculations error
Oh-oh-oh
What is love and what is hate
And why does it matter
Is to love just a waste
Why does it matter
Oh-oh-oh?
As the dawn began to break
I had to surrender
The universe will have its way
Too powerful to master
Oh-oh-oh
What is love and what is hate
And why does it matter
Is to love just a waste
Why does it matter
Oh-oh-oh?
I always wonder what's going on that's got the crowd laughing at several points during this song.
Used to think the same thing first few listens. But then I realized it sounds like there’s no specific reason, just random laughter and applause which makes it even better. Just unplanned laughter and excitement. Something we can all applaud.
We are all poor imitations of something else I suppose.
Nothing to do with the song - but I was recently reading about our bodies refreshing cells and the sheer number of DNA-driven copies made, with a tiny percentage error that will build up...
We're all poor imitations of ourselves
I don’t know why but every time I hear that intro with the laughing cheering audience, I feel like sobbing. Tears peek out at the corners of my eyes.
I get a strange sense of foreboding. It’s an oddly powerful piece of music. After all this time, I’m still not sure if I like it.
at the space station....
Last night I had a very spicy 🌶 concarne, which gave me a some serious flaming lips. That transpired into a Ring of Fire this morning which reminded me of Johnny Cash and how RP worms it’s way into every orifice of my life....roll on RP 👍
this is poetry ... well done mon brave
early Pink Floyd—-that's a pretty song.
Syd Barrett was inspired by and quoting from the I Ching (The Book of Changes) when he wrote that song ("Chapter 24"). It is a cool song.
Are they sampling Pink Floyd at the beginning?
Not as far as I can hear.
Great song, great album, great band.
Definitely channeling some Moody Blues in that mix.
I love to put this album on and get high... Or just to put this album on. But I never get high without music...
It's okay to get high in nature without music
Sounds a bit like Mercury Rev. Is there any connection?
The same production, Dave Fridmann, a former Mercury Rev member.
This remains one of the most Radio Paradise songs for me.
Lol 😆
Gee, doncha think that's kind of harsh? After all, the guy mostly plays weddings and stuff. I've never heard him sing, but it seems doubtful that he'd have much of a career if his voice is as bad as you say it is. Perhaps someone else cares to check him out: https://www.guitarsolo.com/

Bob Dillon.! Good one, WonderLizard!

Definitely channeling some Moody Blues in that mix.
I love to put this album on and get high... Or just to put this album on. But I never get high without music...
I agree with all of the above...:)
(I'm aware of the silly puns that this last sentence can draw. And I'm fine with it )

The lyrics are very poignant right now as the world gets closer and closer to the abyss.
The whole album works as a classic concept approach.
Definitely channeling some Moody Blues in that mix.

I agree. It's one of those shows you have to see before you die.
I saw them perform a few years ago at the Eden Project in Cornwall, supported by The Go Team and Here We Go Magic. Energetic, mad, sublime, and unforgettable. Love the Flips!

Check out the Flaming Lips concert on Austin City Limits from 2004
Several years ago people made this into a play in San Diego and I believe Wayne Coyne was involved. It was really cool. They made it about battling cancer and Yoshimi was battling the cancer cells (pink robots) with her white robots (T-cells). They made these really cool larger than life robots that moved and interacted with Yoshimi. It bounced back and forth between the "real life" scenes and the battle with the robots. They weaved in most or all of the songs into the story. I wish it had been better received and was more successful, but I really enjoyed it. The promo above isn't the best but I think they tried to amp it up a bit but you get the idea. It was in 2012.

Not even.
Are the Moody Blues only meant for wealthy folks?

Love this whole album.

Wouldn't call the Flaming Lips cheap amateurist in my book.
I hope you're joking :)
"I hate this music! He sings like a horse!"
"but... don't you know WHO this is? It's Bruce SPRINGSTEEN!"
"oh.. well then.. I guess it's kinda great"
Tell us how you really feel.
The Flaming Lips are pretty trippy, but I think that's pretty cool.
Make it so, and buy *At War with the Mystics* as well (Track 2: 'Free Radicals'). Myself, I didn't know they have put out that much since then. Need to listen.

Thanks, Bill.
What does that mean, I wonder?
Synthesizer, laugh, applause...repeat
...but still a cool song :)
But pretty cool synthesizer though...
and pretty cool song. Sounds like the soundtrack from a movie.
sure is.

Startrek's elevator music.
I was thinking more of a tangerine

It's called Synesthesia...love this song.
Funny, 'cuz I would say it's orangy or melony/pink... and I've also found that it also feels warm.

These guys are SO wierd but totally worth it.
It's different, for sure. If you get the CD, the whole thing is funny and worthy.
Snap!
I was very disappointed when I down loaded this album since it sounds like it was recroded on an old 4 track. I keep thinking how much more brillant it would be if it wasn't so 'washed out'. I cant figure out what effect they were going for.
The : Recorded on the old 4 track tape recorder one ?
The lyrics and overall sense I get from this song suggests that maybe something orange was indeed involved in the transmution of the senses.

It definitely plays very well as a complete album, much like Pink Floyd. And i'm typically not a whole album listener!

Totally Agree, it is great beginning to end. Sit back, and relax and let it take you somewhere.
(hope he's on Spotify)
A little like Pink Floyd as well !?

I can't say for sure, since I don't have that ability; but if I did, I'm pretty sure this song would look like Thom Yorke.
Me, too! (But the "Big Bird drops acid and does Gordon Lightfoot's 'Early Morning Rain'" thing is pretty funny....)

And RP hasn't cost me a fortune yet, but when I have some disposable income and a couple of bills are paid down, I suspect I'll end up back in debt, but with a priceless cache of new music. It'll be worth it. Music is always worth it.
