If one is doing a tribute to an artist whose work they admire by recording a cover of one of the original artist's tunes, they would seldom presume their new version to be "superior" to the original version - especially if it is meant to be a tribute. A tribute, by it's nature, often has to be "inferior" to the original, or at least be an alternative take on the piece. Obviously, how "inferior" or "superior" listeners may find that version is subjective.
its not the same song if you change the tune!
Did they change to tune or did they just change the key?
Either way, this sounds good to my ears not accustomed to the original. Seems to have more of that wrenching emotion.

For those of you who are living, I would love to hear what you think.

Thankfully I am still living and am a lifelong John Martyn fan. I agree you have lifted out some of the better tracks as tributes to John but I am not going to critique your list. These artists wanted to pay tribute to a very talented and somewhat understood artist and their recordings and, I think, have a huge personal element to them as they clearly were recorded from their own standpoint.
I so miss seeing John live, but at least his music is still there.
Yeah, bad ass like that. I really dig this song!
I am a John Martyn fan from way back, and my old posts attest to the fact that he was for the most part overlooked on RP for a long time.
The original body of work speaks for itself.
From the tribute CD, IMHO the following tracks are outstanding reinterpretations of the original classics:
1. David Gray - Let The Good Things Come
2. Robert Smith - Small Hours
3. Beck - Stormbringer
4. Emporers of Wyoming - Bless The Weather
5. Snow Patrol - May You Never (a classic cover)
6. Judy Tzuke - Hurt in Your Heart (ditto)
7. Blackships - Rope Soul'd
8. Phil Collins - Tearing and Breaking
Skye's version of Solid Air didn't make the cut for me, only because I don't know how anybody could have topped the original.
RIP, JM.
For those of you who are living, I would love to hear what you think.
