Caught Jonathan Richman last night at the Andy Warhol museum. Third time Iâd seen him, the first being around 1984, which is one of my all time favorite shows.
It was lots of fun. I recognized Egyptian Reggae near the beginning, and he had a tendency to make a two or three song medley at times. The crowd went all in for Dancing in A Lesbian Bar singalong.
He asked if we had âany ideasâ and used that to gently tell us that those old songs belonged to a different time. Probably a nightly schtick. Sang a song in Italian, Spanish, and French - but asides to let us know what was going on in them. Took Pablo Picasso and tripled its length with extra lyrics, some role play, and just goofing around. Wonderful.
Near the end did âFrozen Skyâ and for the encore a tune where the ocean wanted him back, but he wasnât ready yet. It was good of a Jonathan show as anyone would expect, and my Better Half⢠totally dug it, and the neighbor couple whoâd never heard of him seemed to get it as well.
I love the YouTube rabbit hole... I went to watch a Merle Travis Nine Pound Hammer video and when it was over, the algorithm showed me this completely unrelated half-a-song from Of Monsters And Men last night:

Boy inside the man
Struggling to survive
Only needs a hand
To help him stay alive
Boy inside the man
Only wants to be heard
Before the hourglass sand
Silences every single word
